Where is Karakoy Gulluoglu Baklava Istanbul + Costs

I can confidently say that the best baklava shop in Istanbul is Karakoy Gulluoglu. During my stay in Istanbul, I visited several baklava shops throughout the city multiple times, but nowhere did I find baklavas as delicious as those at Karakoy Gulluoglu. In my opinion, the baklavas at Karakoy Gulluoglu are even tastier than those at Hafiz Mustafa.

If you’d like to know why, read this article to the end to learn more about the location, prices, and flavors of Karakoy Gulluoglu’s baklava.

My experience visiting Karakoy Gulluoglu

Since I love baklava, I visited this shop multiple times at different hours of the day. One morning, while I was in Istanbul, I went to the shop at 9 AM and noticed that only a few people were there, which allowed me to quickly pick my favorite baklavas without waiting and enjoy them with a cup of tea.

A few days later, I revisited the shop, but this time, I went at 6 PM and was quite surprised to see a large crowd. Many people were standing in line to buy their desired baklavas.

So, if you don’t want to wait in line for too long to enjoy baklava, I suggest visiting the shop between 9 AM and 11 AM.

The shop has plenty of tables and chairs, and since it has two floors, you can easily find a free table either on one of the floors or in the garden outside the shop. If you don’t find an empty seat right away, don’t worry because if you wait just 1 or 2 minutes, a seat will likely become available for you to use.

Varieties of Baklava at Karakoy Gulluoglu

You can find around 20 different types of baklavas with various flavors there. In my opinion, the most delicious one is the cold baklava. The top layer is crispy, and it’s filled with plenty of pistachio pieces in the middle. There is also a bit of milk at the bottom to balance the distinct, intense sweetness of the baklava, making it even more delicious.

I tried several different types of baklavas there, and I highly recommend choosing one that has pistachios or walnuts inside. The presence of pistachios or walnuts in baklava makes it even more delicious.

Some baklavas have a soft texture, while others are crispy. In my opinion, the softer ones are tastier. I recommend that in addition to buying the cold, crispy baklava, you also try the soft pistachio baklava.

Prices of Baklava at Karakoy Gulluoglu

Each type of baklava has a different price, but on average, each piece costs around $1.5 (60 lira). In the image below, you can see the prices and types of baklava available at the shop.

The price of tea there is 22 lira (about $0.6) per person. On average, for five pieces of baklava along with a cup of tea, you’ll need to pay around 300 to 400 lira, which I think is worth it.

How to Buy Baklava at Karakoy Gulluoglu

When you enter the shop, on your right, you’ll find a section where you can buy pre-packaged baklava to take home as a souvenir. On your left is the self-service area, where you can grab a plate, stand in line, and tell the server which type of baklava you want so they can place it on your plate. After selecting your baklava, head to one of the cash registers to pay for your purchase.

I recommend paying for the tea there as well and getting a receipt. If you hand this receipt to the beverage counter, you can receive a cup of tea.

At Karakoy Gulluoglu, besides baklava, they also sell ice cream. Instead of tea, you can opt for a scoop of ice cream for 50 lira and enjoy it with your baklava. The combination of baklava and ice cream is one of my favorites, and I highly suggest you try it as well.

To buy ice cream, simply pay for it when you pay for your baklava. Then, head to the ice cream freezer, hand your receipt to the server, and receive your chosen ice cream.

If you feel thirsty after eating baklava, you can also use the free water dispenser located in the corner of the shop to get a drink of water.
