Tips and Travel of Turkey

What to Wear in Turkey in March For Memorable Trip?

Based on my experience living in various cities in Turkey, the number of tourists traveling to Turkish cities, especially Istanbul, starts to increase from March. The reason is that the weather begins to warm up during this month.

After talking to travelers who visited Turkey in March, I realized that most of them were unaware of the actual weather conditions in Turkey during this time. They expected the weather to be much warmer, so they didn’t pack appropriate clothing and had to buy extra clothes to feel comfortable during their outings. Therefore, I decided to prepare a complete list of essential clothing for a trip to Turkey in March so that you don’t need to purchase additional clothes during your trip.

Weather in Turkey in march

Before providing more information, it’s helpful to familiarize you with the weather conditions in Turkey’s main cities during March. This will help you better understand the reasons behind the recommendations in the list above.

Istanbul 5°C – 15°C (41°F – 59°F) Frequent rain showers, sunny spells Layers, waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes

My Clothing Style in Turkey in March

Based on my experience, most Turkish cities have sunny or partly cloudy mornings in March. However, as the sun sets, temperatures drop, and it gets colder. So, if you plan to go out in the evening, I highly recommend packing all the items mentioned above in your suitcase.

There’s also a chance of rain, so having a raincoat and an umbrella will help you explore the city without worrying about getting wet. Since temperatures in March can be unpredictable, it’s best to dress in layers. For sunny days, a long-sleeve shirt is a good choice, and having a jacket or raincoat on hand allows you to quickly put it on if it gets chilly, so you can continue your outing comfortably. I always dress this way in March to avoid getting caught off guard by sudden weather changes.

I learned this lesson after one sunny March day in Istanbul when I went for a walk in Emirgan Park wearing only a long-sleeve shirt, thinking the weather would stay warm and sunny until sunset. But after a few hours, it suddenly turned cloudy and started raining. I got soaked, and ever since then, I always carry a jacket or raincoat with me.

If your destination is Istanbul, keep in mind that the city’s weather in March is quite unpredictable, and even the weather forecasts may not be fully accurate. So, take my advice and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

Essential Tips for Traveling to Turkey in March

Women are required to wear a headscarf when visiting mosques. Therefore, if you plan to visit mosques, be sure to bring a headscarf to wear during your visit. If you don’t have a headscarf with you, you can purchase one from local shops after arriving in Turkey. For further information on buying headscarves and other affordable clothing, you may refer to the article Cheap Clothing Brands in Turkey.

Men are also required to wear long pants to enter mosques; entry in shorts is not permitted. So, if you plan to visit a mosque, be sure to pack a pair of jeans or appropriate trousers in your luggage.

Another important point to consider is the cultural differences across various regions in Turkey. If you plan to visit cities in eastern Turkey, it is advisable to pack more modest clothing, as people in these areas are generally more religious and prefer that tourists avoid wearing revealing or inappropriate attire. However, if your destination is in western cities like Antalya or Istanbul, you can enjoy greater freedom in choosing your attire; locals in these areas are generally less conservative and less sensitive about dress codes.

Final Thoughts

Don’t assume that just because you’re traveling to Turkey in spring, the weather will be warm and pleasant. In reality, March is still a bit chilly, although it does start to gradually warm up throughout the month. If, after reading the information above, you feel that Turkey in March might still be too cold for your liking, I recommend visiting in April when the weather is warmer.
